What is a Loan Shark

If you can answer yes to one or more of these questions you might be borrowing from a loan shark:

  • Did they offer you a cash loan?
  • Did they not give you paperwork?
  • Did they add huge amounts of interest or APR to your loan?
  • Have they threatened you?
  • Are you scared of people finding out?
  • Have they taken your bank card, benefit card, passport, watch or other valuables from you?

“Issues around Loan Sharks are very serious and can lead to a life of continuous debt. It is very important that the message relaying the dangers of getting involved with Loan Sharks is appropriately communicated to all members of the community. For those who are born deaf, their native language is British Sign Language (BSL), therefore verbal and written communications can often be very challenging to access and understand. This is why it is vital for deaf people, that as much information as possible relating to Loan Sharks, should be translated into BSL, to make sure the important message can be fully understood. This project will ensure the resources provided, relays the information and reinforces the message to all members of the community, whether deaf or non-deaf, we should all ‘Be Deaf to Loan Sharks’ says DEAFS Project Leader, Brian Kokoruwe.
